The American Red Cross is not a government agency and all Red Cross disaster assistance is free thanks to the generosity of people like you. Ninety-two cents of every dollar donated to the American Red Cross is spent on programs and services that help people in need. What's more, the value of your donation is increased by the fact that the ratio of volunteer Red Cross workers to paid staff is almost 150 to one. The San Juan Chapter is also a partner in funding with the United Way.

Disaster Relief Fund

As Hurricanes Charley and Frances, ravaged the state of Florida millions of people were evacuated and endured major property damage. Now we can add Hurricane Ivan to the list and include Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia as states affected by this season's active hurricane season. Over 312,000 people have found refuge and comfort in Red Cross shelters from the effects of these devastating storms across these states. Hurricane Ivan made landfall early morning September 16th as a powerful category four hurricane on the Alabama coast near Mobile Bay. Hundreds of thousands of people fled the path of this storm from New Orleans, LA to Apalachicola, FL. The American Red Cross was prepared having set up shelters in safe locations throughout the hurricane strike area, and on evacuation routes to accommodate the influx of people that have left their homes. Hurricane Ivan makes this a record season with three major hurricanes affecting Florida and the Gulf coast in one season, creating one of the largest evacuations in Red Cross history, and we are calling on the American people to help ensure that we are financially ready to tackle this disaster and still be able to meet the needs of victims of other, smaller disasters that are happening right now, across our country and in your community.

As always, all American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by the voluntary donations of time and money from the American people. You can help the victims of this seasons and thousands of other disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund gives the Red Cross and its volunteers the capacity to immediately meet the needs of victims by enabling the organization to act BEFORE donations are made – when help is needed the most.

In-Kind Contributions (Donate Goods)

In this day of corporate downsizing and consolidations, businesses are looking for ways to do more with less. This trend has impacted the way businesses contribute to charitable organizations. Instead of cash contributions, many companies today are finding that in-kind giving (donated goods or services) is easier on the bottom line, and often just as meaningful to the recipient as a cash contribution. And non-profit organizations like the Red Cross are finding that the expertise and resources common in the for-profit world can sometimes help in ways that money can't.
If you or someone you know can donate any of the following items to help carry out the humanitarian work of the San Juan Red Cross, please contact the Office at 505-325-9605.
