The American Red Cross is not a
government agency and all Red Cross disaster assistance is free thanks
to the generosity of people like you. Ninety-two cents of every dollar
donated to the American Red Cross is spent on programs and services
that help people in need. What's more, the value of your donation is
increased by the fact that the ratio of volunteer Red Cross workers to
paid staff is almost 150 to one. The San Juan
Chapter is also a partner in funding with the United Way.

Tornado & Hurricane Recommendations:
To stay safe and recover from a tornado
or hurricane, the Red Cross
recommends the following:
- Continue listening to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio
for updated information and instructions.
- If you are away from home, return only when authorities say
it is safe to do so.
- Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and sturdy shoes when
examining your walls, doors, staircases and windows for damage.
- Watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines and
report them to the utility company immediately.
- Stay out of damaged buildings.
- Use battery-powered flashlights when examining buildings –
do NOT use candles.
- If you smell gas or hear a blowing or hissing noise, open a
window and get everyone out of the building quickly and call the gas company or
fire department.
- Take pictures of damage, both of the building and its
contents, for insurance claims.
- Use the telephone only for emergency calls.
- Keep all of your animals under your direct control.
- Clean up spilled medications, bleaches, gasoline or other
flammable liquids that could become a fire hazard.
- Check for injuries. If you are trained, provide first aid
to persons in need until emergency responders arrive.
The Red Cross encourages those in tornado-prone areas to use
the
Tornado Safety Checklist, which provides information on what you can do
before, during and after a tornado strikes.

In-Kind Contributions (Donate Goods)
In this day of corporate downsizing
and consolidations, businesses are looking for ways to do more with
less. This trend has impacted the way businesses contribute to
charitable organizations. Instead of cash contributions, many companies
today are finding that in-kind giving (donated goods or services) is
easier on the bottom line, and often just as meaningful to the
recipient as a cash contribution. And non-profit organizations like the
Red Cross are finding that the expertise and resources common in the
for-profit world can sometimes help in ways that money can't.
If you or someone you know can donate any of the following items to
help carry out the humanitarian work of the San Juan Red Cross, please
contact the Office at 505-325-9605.
Third Party Fundraiser
The San Juan Chapter of the American
Red Cross welcomes the opportunity to partner with businesses and
groups implementing special fundraising events that benefit Red Cross
programs and services. The Red Cross can provide volunteer support and
visibility (banners, posters, vehicles, media relations, etc.) in
support of approved fundraising activities. To support the Red Cross
through third-party fund raising activities, contact the Office at
505-325-9605.
