The American Red
Cross is known for
its assistance to
victims of major
disasters like
hurricanes,
earthquakes and
tornadoes, yet many
do not realize that
local Red Cross
volunteers provide
much needed help to
our neighbors in
this community who
have suffered from
single-family house
fires.
The Red Cross local
disaster relief
program provides
immediate food,
clothing, shelter,
limited medical
assistance and
mental health
services to
individuals and
families who have
lost their homes due
to a fire, flood and
other types of
disasters. These
services are not
income based, they
are available to the
meet specifics needs
of each individual
family based on
their needs.
These services
are available 24
hours a day, every
day of the year. All
Red Cross assistance
to disaster victims
is free. It is given
through the
generosity of the
American people.
Introduction to
Disaster Training
Responding to a
disaster requires
quick thinking and
standardized
operations.
Volunteers who wish
to respond both
locally and
nationally must be
trained in advance,
as there is little
time for training
during the disaster.
Classes are
structured for
advancement into
American Red Cross
groups and
activities. When a
disaster happens, we
call on those who
are trained to
perform specific
functions.

Disaster Training
Classes
Red Cross disaster
training is
presented in a
variety of formats,
including online,
blended (online plus
classroom) and live
classroom courses.
Most required
classes are created
by the American Red
Cross or the
Chapter, but some
learning is
available from other
sources, such as the
Federal Emergency
Management Agency
(FEMA IS classes).
The following forms
can be completed on
line but you will
need to print them
out and then fax,
mail or drop them
off at the San Juan
Chapter office.
Another option is to
save the completed
forms on your
computer and then
e-mail them as
attachments to
dwade_arc@digii.net.
