Of all Red Cross
programs and
services, none more
clearly exemplify
the organization's
mission to provide
people with the
skills necessary to
prevent, prepare for
and respond to
emergencies than do
the programs of the
Safety Services
department.
Since 1914, the
Red Cross has led
the crusade to
drown-proof America.
Through the Red
Cross Infant and
Preschool Aquatic
Program, even the
youngest water
enthusiasts can
acquire basic water
safety skills. In
addition to
promoting personal
safety in and around
the water, the Red
Cross trains people
in lifeguarding
skills.
The Safety
Services Department
relies primarily on
volunteer
instructors to teach
the many community
and workplace
programs.
Consequently, an
active instructor
training program
exists. Red Cross
instructors are
experienced
educators who
continually update
and perfect their
skills through
continuing
education.
